Why parking is hard on this stretch
I-880 runs from San Jose up through Fremont, Hayward and San Leandro into Oakland, and it is one of the densest freight corridors in California — it feeds the Port of Oakland, several intermodal yards and a long run of distribution warehouses.
Alameda County's own transport commission identifies the I-880 corridor as having among the highest incidence of truck traffic, truck parking and congestion in the county. That is the polite version. The practical version is that legal overnight parking is scarce, and trucks end up on shoulders and ramps, which is both a citation risk and a genuine safety problem.
The federal clock, which is why you are looking
Under the federal Hours of Service rules you may drive up to 11 hours within a 14-hour window, and you then need 10 consecutive hours off duty before driving again.
That 10-hour figure is the one that matters here, and it is the reason the next section is a problem rather than a detail.
California rest areas: eight hours, not ten
State rest areas in California limit any vehicle to eight hours of parking in any 24-hour period. The regulation says it plainly: "Vehicles shall not be parked and persons shall not remain for more than eight (8) hours in any twenty-four (24) hour period." It draws no distinction between a car, an RV and a commercial truck. Camping is separately and explicitly prohibited, as is pitching a tent.
So a California rest area cannot legally accommodate a full 10-hour break. If you need a complete reset rather than a short rest, a rest area is not a lawful place to take it, and planning around one means either moving mid-break or sitting over the limit.

Parking on the street in Oakland
Two Oakland rules matter to anybody thinking about leaving a truck on the street.
No vehicle may be parked on any street or alley for more than 72 consecutive hours. That is a flat limit on all vehicles, not a commercial-vehicle rule, and the city may tow past it. It is the reason a street is not a place to leave a trailer while you are away on a run.
Separately, commercial vehicles are restricted on specific named streets, not across the city as a blanket. Some streets are closed to commercial vehicles outright where signposted; others bar any vehicle over four and a half tons, in a couple of cases only between 11pm and 6am. There is a carve-out for taking a direct route in to load or unload goods — but that is an exception for working, not for resting. Because the restrictions are street-by-street and sign-based, the signs are what bind you, and the city's published truck routes are worth a look before you improvise a route to a yard.

If you are running the Port
The Port of Oakland runs its own Comprehensive Truck Management Program and publishes a trucker resources page covering registration, terminal access and appointments. Port requirements are separate from anything on this page, and they change more often — go to the Port's own pages for those rather than trusting a summary anywhere else.
What this leaves you
Realistically, three options for a long break on this corridor:
- A truck stop or travel centre, if you arrive early enough. These fill, and on this corridor they fill early.
- Your own carrier's or customer's yard, if you have access to one.
- A booked space, which is the only one of the three you can know about in advance.
We are not neutral about the third one — this is our site. But the honest case for booking is narrow and specific: it is the only option where the space is definitely there when you arrive, and on a corridor where lots fill by seven that is the whole value.

Yards listed with us on this corridor appear below, with their rates, what fits, and how you get in. A booked space is held for the whole of your booked period — if you turn up late, it is still yours.
Nothing on this page is legal advice. Rules are set by the state and by each city, they change, and only the authority that set them can tell you what applies to you today.
